Do you want to earn a few bragging rights? It's simple. Simply test your Ford Expedition accelerations time, of course, in a hands-free as well as fully automated way. What's more, post the Expedition 0-60 time to your leaderboard.

The leaderboard will feature accuracy to the millisecond and display your position in comparison to other users in real time. Also, it'll save for you lots of acceleration times from various models.

Most crossover SUVs on the market today are based on a car architecture, which makes them lighter and more dynamic on the road, but truck-based SUVs are still the way to go if you want a vehicle that’s capable off-road and that can tow bigger trailers.

The Ford Expedition is just that kind of an SUV. It’s big and functional, thanks to seating arrangements for up to eight passengers, while it’s also strong enough to tow up to 9,300 pounds, which is close to truck territory.

Ford’s big SUV comes with a 3.5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbocharged V6 that pumps out 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque in the XLT and Limited models and 400 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque in the highest Expedition Platinum trim.

Ford Expedition 0-60 and Quarter Mile

Being based on a truck, the Expedition is not a light SUV, even though Ford tried to shave off some of the weight by using lighter materials on the body. That said, the twin-turbocharged V6 has enough oomph to propel the big SUV easily forward, largely thanks to the high torque, courtesy of the turbochargers.

The new 10-speed automatic transmission certainly helps to keep the engine in the optimal power band, while also being both smooth and fast when shifting gears. It’s also fast to respond to kickdown, downshifting several gears at a time. Thanks to the powerful combination of the EcoBoost engine and 10-speed auto, the Ford Expedition can tow up to 9,300 pounds when equipped with the tow package.

On the road, the Expedition leans in the corners more than a car-based SUV and the steering doesn’t have a lot of feedback, but all of that is expected in a car like this. More importantly, the steering is precise and the big Expedition is easy to place on the road, while also being very comfortable as well. In contrast to most car-based SUVs, the Expedition can venture off-road when equipped with the FX4 off-road package.

Exterior & Interior

The exterior of the Expedition is a combination of straight side body panels that give a muscular appearance to the already big SUV. The front end is a bit softer than the aggressive one in Ford’s trucks but still gives a strong impression. The rear end looks largely minimalistic and retro, but still manages to finish off the whole minimalistic, yet sporty look.

On the inside, the cabin design is the same that can be found in the F-150, but with better materials that give it a more upmarket look, especially in the high-end Platinum model. Still, even in that trim, premium competitors like the Mercedes GLS offer more luxurious surroundings.

There is space for up to 8 passengers in the Expedition and seating is very comfortable, even in the third row. This is a true people and cargo hauler.

Conclusion

Being based on a truck platform, you can’t expect a very connected driving experience in the Expedition – it drives like a big old SUV. But for most owners, that will not be very important. As a people and cargo mover, the Expedition is very good indeed. There is a lot of space inside, the cabin is well-made, and the twin-turbocharged engine and 10-speed auto combo can propel the vehicle forward without any fuss.
