Replacing the headlight bulbs on a 2018 Ford F-150 is a little different than what most people are used to on newer vehicles. A lot of modern cars combine the high beam and low beam into a single bulb, but the F-150 doesn’t work that way. If you have halogen headlights, which applies to the 2015 through 2020 models and even beyond, you’re dealing with two separate bulbs. One bulb handles the low beam and the other handles the high beam. The low beam uses an H11 bulb, while the high beam uses a 9005 bulb.
The good news is that this is a really easy job. You don’t even need to open the hood unless you plan on disconnecting the battery. The entire process is done through the wheel well, and once you’ve done it once, it’s pretty straightforward. There are a few small tricks that make the job easier, and those come from actually working through it rather than just reading instructions.
Starting on the passenger side, the first thing to do is turn the wheel all the way to the right so it’s pointed outward. This gives access to the area behind the inner fender liner. Once the wheel is turned out, you can reach in and see several clips and fasteners that need to be removed to get clearance. There’s a plastic clip that spins out, followed by two fasteners that come out using a 7/32 socket. After those are removed, there’s another screw higher up in the fender that can be taken out to gain a little more room.
With those fasteners removed, the inner fender liner can be peeled down just enough to see the back of the headlight housing. The liner isn’t very pliable, so it doesn’t want to move easily. If it feels too tight, removing an additional pin near the top makes a big difference. Pulling that pin allows the liner to drop farther out of the way, which gives you the clearance needed to get your hand behind the headlight. The goal is simply to make enough room to work comfortably, because space is tight and you’re reaching in at an awkward angle.
Once there’s access to the back of the headlight, the dust caps become visible. These dust caps pull straight off and expose the bulb sockets. With the dust cap removed, the bulb can be twisted to unlock it and then pulled out of the housing. The bulb comes out far enough to easily disconnect the wiring.
When installing the new bulb, handling is important. You don’t want to touch the glass or the filament, so the bulb should be held carefully. Connecting the wiring to the bulb before installing it into the housing makes the process easier. After it’s connected, the bulb is inserted, twisted into place, and gently tugged to make sure it’s locked in securely. Once the bulb is seated, the dust cap is pushed back into place, where it seals itself naturally without much effort.
After the lower bulb is finished, the process moves to the upper bulb. This bulb sits higher and farther back, so it’s a little harder to reach, but the steps are exactly the same. The dust cap is pulled off, the bulb is twisted out, and the wiring is disconnected. Installing the new bulb works best when the bulb is seated first and then the wiring is routed afterward. Trying to force everything in at once usually doesn’t work because there just isn’t enough room.
Once the upper bulb is twisted into place and locked, the dust cap goes back on. At that point, both bulbs should be fully installed and ready to test. Turning the headlights on confirms that both the low beams and high beams are working properly before everything is reassembled.
Reassembly is simply the reverse of removal. The dust shields are checked to make sure they’re fully seated, and the inner fender liner is put back into place so it continues to protect the headlight area from water, dust, and road debris. One thing learned during the process is that the dust caps are actually very easy to remove and reinstall. Pulling from one side gets them off quickly, and pushing from the center allows them to seat properly without stretching them around the opening.
If you have a lot of flexibility and don’t mind working in tight spaces, it’s possible to do this job without removing the extra pin from the liner. However, working in a tighter space increases the risk of touching the bulb or damaging it, so creating more room makes the job easier and safer.
The driver’s side headlight is done the exact same way as the passenger side. The wheel is turned outward, the liner is pulled back, and the bulbs are accessed from behind. Once you’ve done one side, the other side goes much faster.
Overall, replacing the headlight bulbs on a 2018 Ford F-150 is a simple, hands-on job that doesn’t require special tools or advanced mechanical skills. With a little patience and the right approach, both bulbs can be replaced cleanly and efficiently without ever opening the hood.
