The OM642 is a six-cylinder diesel engine developed by Mercedes-Benz, manufactured from 2005 to 2021 in Berlin and Untertürkheim. The engine was first deployed in the Mercedes C-Class W203, and later in almost all other Daimler models in the higher price ranges, in some transporters, as well as in models from the brands Chrysler and Jeep.

Conclusion

At its core, the OM642 is a fundamentally solid engine that can hardly be matched in terms of smooth running and performance. While its reliability is generally not bad, there are several weaknesses that can cost a lot of money if ignored.

You should therefore avoid purchasing a Mercedes with this engine if the service book has significant gaps or is missing altogether. If you also don't have the necessary funds for potential repairs, you may be better off with the more maintenance-friendly and cheaper to maintain four-cylinder series OM646.
