Do you want to earn a few bragging rights? It's simple. Simply test your Volkswagen Golf GTI accelerations time, of course, in a hands-free as well as fully automated way. What's more, post the Golf GTI 0-60 time to your leaderboard.
The leaderboard will feature accuracy to the millisecond and display your position in comparison to other users in real time. Also, it'll save for you lots of acceleration times from various models.
Since its debut 35 years ago, the Volkswagen Golf GTI has gone ahead to feature in multiple test reviews, showcasing tremendous results that have accrued to it the much-deserved praise. There’s always a new and creative way to describe this little firecracker. Nothing compares to the little monster’s power as it has appeared 15 times in Car and Driver’s 10Best Cars list in the last 12 years.
Under its hood is the same turbocharged, 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder engine that churns 220 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It comes as either a six-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch automatic. The manual is slower and gets to 60mph in 6.2 seconds, finishing the quarter of a mile in 14.7 secs at 98.6mph. The automatic GTI hits 60mph in 6.0 seconds and covers the same quarter of a mile in 14.5 secs at 98.4mph. For a solid acceleration run, the manual’s traction control system had to be tricked for it to deliver during one of its test drives. However, the shifting in the automatic version was smooth and seamless.
Braking performance was tested with both versions wearing the all-season Pirelli Cinturato P7 tires that are mostly fitted in family sedans. Nevertheless, the heavier automatic GTI was able to stop from 60mph at 129 ft. The manual required 124 feet to perform the same task. Despite the squealing tires, both models exhibited a firm bite on the pedal.
Common in most of VW cars, the GTI interior is well-crafted and straightforward. It offers competitive space when compared to its competitors. The driver is adequately protected from ambient noise within the cabin. However, a Brüel & Kjær Type 2250-L sound meter placed between in the middle of the front seats shows that there isn’t much that has been done to eliminate tire and wind noises when moving at highway speed.
The Golf GTI is quite impressive in its ability to deliver a dynamic drive. The space within is satisfying and comes in a particularly useful interior package. At the back is 23 cubic feet of cargo area which blends well with the boxy hatchback silhouette. When the rear seats are folded, storage space increases to 53 cubic feet. Rear seaters are exposed to well-sculpted cushions and clear side window views.
The front features well-bolstered seats, high-quality plastic and impeccable assemblage of material. Besides, VW installed the latest infotainment system which is well organized and operable. It integrates perfectly with VW’s native interface and the driver’s smartphone.
The Euro-spec GTI model comes with more engine power that its U.S.-spec counterpart. However, the 2.0-liter turbo-four is quite robust and offers excellent performance. Autobahn and SE models can be powered down efficiently using a limited-slip differential. This minimizes one-wheel peels, particularly during excited drives.
