Sports cars tend to be very expensive and often out of reach of a lot of enthusiasts around the world. Thankfully, there are vehicles like the Tiburon. Hyundai’s inexpensive sports coupe offers sporty driving characteristics in an interesting-looking coupe body.
The Tiburon may not be the tire shredding monster its competitors are, but it offers driver thrills and is very easy to maintain. Hyundai even thought about the “Fast & Furious” crowd and installed a monstrous subwoofer in the cargo area. A pretty interesting car the Tiburon is.
Hyundai Tiburon Performance
The Tiburon was offered with two engines. The base 2.0-liter had measly 138 horsepower and was as fast as you’d expect. Sure, the Tiburon is a pretty light car, but this powerplant is still not fast enough to be called sporty. If you find one, pray it’ll be with the 5-speed manual, as the 4-speed automatic transmission is very slow.
Real driving enthusiasts will opt for the more powerful V6 engine that pumps out 172 horsepower. This engine not only feels more powerful, but it sounds much better as well. It’s still not neck-snapping fast (0-60 mph takes 7.7 seconds with the 6-speed manual), but it’s fast enough for having fun on the road. That performance is only achievable with the manual gearbox though – the automatic transmission is much slower.
Overall, the Tiburon is a nice car to drive. The gearshifts are slick thanks to the linear clutch, the engine is responsive and the chassis agile. This is a car that’s fun even at lower speeds, which is great praise indeed.
Exterior & Interior
The Tiburon has a pretty busy exterior and reminds of different cars depending on the angle you look at it. Buyers will certainly be drawn by the high beltline and muscular lines, and the big spoiler in GT models certainly adds to the drama and makes the Tiburon look faster than it really is. That said, even though it has a fine overall form, we can’t say that the Tiburon is a beautiful car. We’ll let you decide on that.
Inside, we really like that Hyundai tried to inject sportiness on the dashboard. The vents on the center console are circular, the console itself and the manual gearshift have silver accents, while the steering wheel has three spokes. We also like the blue lightning that’s reminiscent of a tuners car. There’s overall simplicity to the dashboard that we miss in modern cars and that suits the character of the car really well.
With all that said, we couldn’t say that the cabin feels of particularly high quality. Almost every surface area is hard to the touch and fit & finish aren’t terribly good either. Not that this isn’t expected from an inexpensive sports car.
Conclusion
The Hyundai Tiburon is a fine car for enthusiast drivers who don’t expect too much from their vehicle. The Korean coupe offers fun-to-drive character for less money than an economy car, but don’t expect the thrills and adrenaline rush of a real sports car.
