Even though the name of Hyundai’s new compact crossover suggests that it has some sporty pretensions, there is really nothing it does that closely relates to sportiness. In reality, it’s a smaller version of the Santa Fe that’s missing the third row for seating.
That doesn’t make it any less appealing for buyers looking for a vehicle in its class – the Santa Fe Sport offers comfortable interior with a lot of room for passengers, great value and a lot of available features.
Hyundai Santa Fe Performance
If you want your Santa Fe Sport to resemble a sporty driving experience even a tiny bit, you should go with the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, which develops 240 horsepower and healthy 260 pound-feet of torque. Thanks to the turbocharger, this engine pulls from low revs, which makes it pretty easy to drive fast.
The 2.0-liter turbo is equipped with a 6-speed automatic gearbox, which shifts gears very smoothly, but is sometimes reluctant to downshift. With the turbocharged engine, this should not be a problem thanks to the ample torque, but the base one surely needs higher revs and lower gears to keep up with the traffic.
The 2.4-liter numbers look good on paper – 185 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, but those come much later in the rev range. It’s really no comparison to the stronger 2.0-liter turbo – the base engine feels much slower and never feels fast, especially because the Santa Fe Sport is a heavy car for that kind of power.
Dynamics are okay with the Santa Fe Sport, and that’s especially true for the AWD model, which uses an open center differential so send power to the rear wheels. It comes with a torque vectoring function as well, but this one is not as advanced as in some other car – it uses the brakes to reduce the speed of the inside wheel. That said, it’s still functional and keeps the car in the lane without too much fuss. The steering is not as precise as we would’ve liked, but hey, this is still a crossover and not a sports car.
Exterior & Interior
Hyundai has made a good job with the exterior of the Santa Fe Sport. The compact dimensions and clean lines play well together, making a balanced-looking crossover SUV that in our opinion is the best in the brand’s lineup. It may not be the most attractive SUV by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s still a good-looking vehicle in its own.
Inside, the Santa Fe Sport has a design that’s reminiscent of other Hyundai models. The center console immediately catches attention with its big buttons and 8-inch screen. It may not be the best-looking setup in its class, but the big buttons are very easy to hit while driving and the infotainment system is pretty easy to use as well. Here, Hyundai put function over form, and we applaud it for that.
Conclusion
If you don’t need three rows of seats (and we suspect a lot of people will ever need them), the Santa Fe Sport is probably the best crossover SUV in Hyundai’s lineup. It looks good, comes with a lot of standard equipment, has an available 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with more-than-adequate performance and an easy-to-use interior.
