The four-cylinder, 2.0-liter engine churns about 192 hp, falling just 13 horses short of the CR-V. It features a 10:3:1 compression ratio, VTEC variable valve-timing system, and direct fuel injection. The engine is an upgrade of the base 158hp that debuted in 2016 in the Honda Civic. The hardware is essentially the same, including the TD03 single-scroll turbocharger found in some Mitsubishis. What changes is the software in place, boost levels and preference for premium fuel.

Despite philosophical biases against automatic transmissions, the manual CVT exhibits very limited charms. The Accord Sport model comes with a stick shift incorporated in the 1.5T that allows for seamless driving. It can hit 60mph in 7.3 seconds when the accelerator is pushed to its extreme. It covers quarter of a mile in 15.7 secs at 91mph.

This is, however, slow compared to the six-speed manual's zero to sixty mph in 6.1 seconds. The manual is, however, equipped with the 2.0-liter turbo engine. Its counterpart with a 10-speed automatic transmission almost defies the laws of physics by hitting 60mph in 5.5 seconds. Its performance on the quarter mile is an impressive 14.1 seconds at 102mph.

The 1.5T’s acceleration is an improvement from its predecessor. The last Accord required about 7.6 seconds to hit the 60mph mark and covered quarter of a mile in 15.9 secs at 91mph.

The 2018 Accord has a more luxurious look with a pronounced European-like styling. The interior is highly reworked, producing one of the best cabins. The Touring interior features leather upholstery, impressive wood trim on the dash, faux-leather door inserts and a pleasing combination of soft-touch plastic. The lower Sport trim features faux-leather trimmed seats and a carbon-fiber-look.

The front and center console now has a new touchscreen which is an upgrade from the previous slow and maddening touchpad interface. The screen uses physical knobs and buttons for high-level navigation activities and tuning. On the base LX model, there is provision for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support.

Driving features include forward collision warning, automatic braking, cruise control and optional lane departure warning and alleviation. Crash safety tests on the Accord are top-notch, and allow you to have peace of mind.

The Honda Accord is a sedan with many strengths and little to no downsides. It is an easy recommendation to anyone wishing to purchase a midsize sedan. Most shoppers will appreciate the midgrade EX which comes with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capability, blind-spot monitoring, a sunroof, satellite radio, heated front seats, and mirrors. The EX offers something for everyone and is quite a champion among its competitors.
