From its inception over 50 years ago, Mustang was the “go-to” car for car enthusiasts that couldn’t pay the high asking price of exotic sports cars. Sure, the Mustang was all about straight-line performance back in the day, and not for fun in the bends, but in all honesty, that’s what most people wanted in a fast car.
The “need for speed”, soon required even more powerful versions of the Mustang and that’s where Caroll Shelby came in. The racing legend helped Ford in designing and producing even more powerful versions of the car. The first one was called GT350 and was a big success, but the real deal was the GT500, which had 428-cubic-inch big-block V8 that had an easy time burning those back tires.
The latest generation of the GT500 Mustang still comes with a V8 engine, though this time a 5.8-liter with a supercharger, 662 hp and 631 lb-ft of torque, all sent to the rear wheels. The new model is also much better in the bends – a real competitor to the exotic sports cars in almost every area.
Ford Mustang GT500 0-60 and Quarter Mile
If you thought that by being a better handling car the new Mustang GT500 would lose straight-line performance, you’d be wrong. It can accelerate, or better said, catapult you from 0-60 in only 3.5 seconds. The standing quarter mile arrives in only 11.8 seconds, which is a very fast time indeed. And for the brave-hearted, the Mustang can achieve speeds over 200 mph (155 mph limit for the Convertible model), which is a supercar territory.
All of that is easily achieved by any driver, thanks to the tall gearing – you can break the speed limit even in first gear, and go over 140 mph only in third gear. In other words, you’re not required to shift the 6-speed manual as much as in some other cars, thanks to the powerful and torquey supercharged V8 monster under the hood. Add to that an adjustable launch control system that helps for easier starts in first gear and you have a serious drag-race machine.
If the numbers don’t tell the whole story for you, we can break it down in several sentences – the Ford Mustang GT500 is a ferociously fast car that can easily break speed limits, even in the hands of an inexperienced driver. And if you’re into shredding tires and smoking your surroundings, sure, the GT500 can also do that. A real muscle car, same as its ancestors.
Exterior & Interior
Apart from the muscular exterior design we all love on the Mustang, the GT500 model adds several openings on the body that not just look cool, but also that add to the cooling capacity – the powerful V8 engine generates a lot of heat. There are other improvements too – the front end now generates 66% more downforce for high-speed stability and 14% less drag for more speed. The icing on the cake is the two stripes that go from the front to the back of the body – a GT500 exclusive feature.
The interior of the GT500 is not much changed from the normal Mustang, save for better bucket seats that hold your body better in the corners. In other words, don’t expect a luxurious surrounding – that’s not what this car is meant for.
Conclusion
If you love Mustangs and want the most enjoyable driving experience, the GT500 is the version to get. The engine is powerful enough to get you into trouble with the law even in first gear, the handling is good enough so you can dance with it in the bends, and the looks are menacing.
And the GT500 is not just for Mustang lovers – it’s for everyone that wants to experience neck-breaking acceleration and have a lot of fun behind the wheel, for less money than required in an exotic sports car with the same performance. A true performance car for the people.
