Ford’s F-150 may be the most popular full-size truck, but the fortunes were not the same for the smaller Ranger, which was out of favor for the North-American market since 2011, despite still selling well in other markets.

The Ranger comes with a new 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, that can already be found in the Focus RS and the Mustang. According to Ford, this power plant will be competitive to the V6 engines found in the competitors when it comes to torque while delivering better fuel efficiency. The engine is mated to a 10-speed automatic gearbox, a unique proposition in the segment.

Not much is known about the new Ranger at this moment – the only information we have comes from Ford. The power and torque figures of the engine are still not available, and also missing are tow ratings, which are very important for truck buyers. What Ford has said is that the Ranger’s powertrain is developed with the North American customers in mind and that the Ranger can easily tow campers and ATVs.

There is a lot of emphasis on off-road driving this time as well. The new Ranger prioritizes ground clearance, while the available FX4 off-road package adds off-road-tuned shocks, all-terrain tires, frame mounted skid plates and a Terrain Management System with four distinct modes – normal; driving on grass, gravel and snow, driving in mud and ruts and driving on sand. Both 2WD and 4WD models will be available, with the latter being available with an electronic-locking rear axle and low-range gearing.

Exterior & Interior

On the outside, the Ranger looks decidedly muscular, yet still traditional, which is always good news for a truck. The available LED headlights and taillights add to the modern look of the Ford Ranger. Most interesting to look at are certainly the FX4 equipped off-road models, thanks to more aggressive detailing that gives the Ranger a sporty, macho look. The Ford Ranger is available in SuperCab and SuperCrew body styles.

On the inside, the Ranger is one of the most technologically advanced cars in its class. The available SYNC 3 system is equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but also with Ford+Alexa personal assistant and FordPass Connect 4G LTE modem with Wi-Fi access for up to 10 devices. Advanced driver-assist technologies are available as well, like Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Reverse Sensing System, Blind Spot Information System, Pedestrian Detection and Adaptive Cruise Control.

Conclusion

The new Ranger is available in a wide range of body and trim styles, comes with a new 2.3-liter turbocharged four-banger and even better off-road capability with the FX4 package. The interior comes with the refreshed SYNC 3 infotainment system, while advanced driver-aid technologies are also available in higher-end trims.
