Introduction
Ford switched from the traditional body-on-frame construction to a more carlike unibody when it introduced the current generation of explorers back in 2011.
The Explorer is still competitive while entering the eighth model year of its current generation. Currently, the Explorers third-row seat isn’t tremendously spacious, and it doesn’t have the most significant cargo capacity in its class.
0-60 and Engine specs
The base and XLT Explorer trims have a standard fare of a 3.5-liter V-6 providing 290 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque. In most situations, the base engine provides adequate go but can feel winded climbing grades. The optional 2.3-liter turbo-4 with its 280 hp outshined by 310 pound-feet of torque is a better choice. For maximum power and thirst, Explorer Sport and Platinum trims use a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 with 365 hp and 350 pound-feet. Meaning equipped Explorers average just 18 mpg combined.
All Explorers use a 6-speed automatic transmission regardless of engine. All-wheel drive is optional except with the twin-turbo V-6 where it’s mandatory, whereas, front-wheel drive is standard.
The Explorer rides smoothly while taking big bumps in stride despite the large 20-in wheels on many models. Explorer Sports’ firmer special suspension settings are not unduly so. On a curvy road no Explorer hides its mass that well, but unlike some crossover competitors, they feature accurate, direct steering and less body lean. There’s only so much suspension tweaking that can cancel out the Explorers 5,000-pound weight which is before passengers are added.
The Explorer isn’t an adventure mobile even with the multi-mode traction control system on all-wheel-drive models. It tires feature tame, street-oriented treads and it seats low to the ground.
The Explorer can confidently tow smaller trailers with the turbo engines. The twin-turbo V-6 on Sport and Platinum trims can tow 5,000 pounds while the 2.3-liter is rated to tow 3,000 pounds.
Exterior & Interior
The Explorer’s shape is clean and largely unadorned on the outside. The current model is modern enough and smart in certain lighter shades with large wheels and doesn’t try to be faux ragged. Now alloy wheels as standard equipment on all versions of the Explorer, as well as tinted windows are included.
Black grilles make them look like Ford Interceptor police vehicle. Ford charges $55,000 and LED lights, and distinctive wheels help them look worth it.
Unlike other Ford products, the Explorer’s interior avoids the busy look. The optional 8.0-inch touchscreen integrates well with its surroundings, though the 4.2-inch screen on base models doesn’t do it any favors. Earlier explorers’ frustrating capacitive switches have been replaced by much more functional traditional buttons for audio and climate functions.
The synthetic wood trim and dressier stitching in Limited and higher Explorers is more convincing than Base Explorers’ simple cloth upholstery and plain trim.
Verdict
Before its major redesign, the 2018 Ford Explorer gets mild freshening. Also, a 4G LTE modem and Wi-Fi hotspot, and a new Safe and Smart package combine several active safety and driver assist tech together are available.
