What role do tires play in fuel consumption?

Both summer and winter tires play a decisive role in gas consumption. Summer tires have a different texture since they are designed lighter with a finer profile structure than winter tires. As a result, gas mileage is better in the summer.

In winter, many motorists notice the high fuel consumption, as the tire rolls more poorly and are very demanding due to more moisture and snow.

What influence does the optimal tire pressure have on fuel consumption?

The tire can only prove its optimal gas mileage by having the correct tire pressure. You can make a difference in your wallet with the optimal tire pressure.

The correct air pressure can usually be found in the fuel filler cap, in the glove compartment, in the driver's door, on the B-pillar, or in the operating instructions of a motor vehicle. Whether the tire pressure is too low or too high - both increase fuel consumption and tire wear. This shows that tires play a decisive role in saving fuel.

If the tire pressure is low, the energy consumption increases with every start-up of the engine. It is often recommended to increase the specified value by a maximum of 0.2 bar.

In addition, the air pressure should ideally be checked every two weeks, which not only has the advantage that you are always driving with the optimal tire pressure, but also that damage to the tire can be detected earlier.

The incorrect tire pressure not only increases fuel consumption but also wear and tear. If the air pressure is too low, only the outer running surface will be worn; if the air pressure is too high, only the middle running surface will be worn. So the minimum tread depth is quickly fallen below in the appropriate places and new tires have to be produced, a no-go for bargain hunters, as well as a considerable safety risk.

Driving style and gas mileage

An additional and important factor is the driving style, which affects the car and the tires. If the vehicle is usually driven at high speed and at high revs, this will quickly reflect on the wallet.

A lot of energy can be lost through frequent braking and acceleration due to the motor's required power. It is a good practice to drive with foresight and always estimate the optimal braking point in advance.

Driving at high speeds costs a lot of fuel and therefore a lot of unnecessary money. In order to drive in a fuel-efficient way, it is advantageous to keep the engine speed low and to drive with foresight, because overly motivated, sporty, and sharp driving is very expensive.
