Wheel bearings are often overlooked during car maintenance and only receive attention when a defect is imminent. If the initial symptoms are ignored, a worn wheel bearing can have life-threatening consequences.

Wheel bearings must be corrosion-resistant and capable of withstanding temperature fluctuations. The bearing seals play a crucial role in this regard, serving two functions: firstly, they protect the bearings from environmental influences, and secondly, they prevent the leakage of wheel bearing lubricating grease. When the seals fail, the wheel bearing's functionality is increasingly disrupted and will eventually become defective.

Symptoms of a defective wheel bearing include:

  • Loud, grinding noises when driving straight.
  • Knocking noises during cornering.
  • Strong vibrations in the car.
  • A stiff wheel bearing that is difficult to rotate.

Usually, wheel bearings do not need to be replaced since they are designed to last the life of the vehicle. Premature wear is generally attributed to external factors or aggressive driving styles. In the case of older high-mileage used cars, wheel bearing wear is generally to be expected.

While a defective wheel bearing is not an immediate reason to pull over, the problem should not be underestimated. If the wear on the wheel bearing is significantly advanced, it can lead to a sudden wheel lock during driving, potentially resulting in an accident.

Costs for replacing wheel bearings

The cost of a wheel bearing replacement can vary depending on the model, brand, and quality, including labor costs, and can amount to up to $200. In a dealership or authorized service center, the cost may even double. The replacement of a single wheel bearing can take up to an hour, provided that the proper tools are used and the workshop has extensive experience.

It is advisable to replace both wheel bearings on the same axle, as it can be assumed that they will wear out at roughly the same rate, and wear on the other bearing may already be imminent.
