The 2018 Lexus RX 450h is the hybrid version of the automaker’s RX 350 crossover. It’s quicker, more efficient and budget-friendly. Lexus doesn’t compromise on comfort and storage. The RX 450h was previously expensive when compared to the base RX 350. This was due to tons of standard features that augmented its price. Lexus sheds off most of the luxuries to make the latest model affordable. There are, however, a number of packages and independent options that can be purchased to improve the specs. Lexus has two variants for its popular crossover SUV.
The RX 350 packs a V6 that comes with front-drive or all-wheel-drive. The hybrid RX 450 comes with all-wheel-drive as standard. It also features a low-output V6 that makes 247 pound-feet of torque and 259 horsepower together with the accompanying batteries and electric motors. The front wheels are powered by gas while electric power gets the rear up and running. The RX 450h can launch exclusively on battery power. The powertrain sounds and feels sporty. It gets more satisfying in the F Sport trim. Here, drivers get to experience the power-meter gauge as it shifts from drive mode to a tachometer in Sport Mode. The spindle grille that we see in today’s Lexus models was once reserved for the manufacturer’s exclusive designs. Currently, it cuts across the lineup. It works well on the large SUVs such as the RX, particularly the RX 450h Hybrid. Things only get better from there.
The RX 450h gets tons of exterior features that add to its style. Following in the footsteps of the Nissan Murano is the Hybrid with a floating canopy-like roof. The Murano was the first vehicle to spot the feature and still offers great competition to the RX. Below the roof are extravagant flares and sculpts which add to the RX’s playful contours. The previous uncontroversial RX that featured a Taylor-era styling is no more. The interior is calm and orderly. Drivers are kept away from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. The exterior acts like a flashy armor that protects the driver. The dash is horizontally themed and carries thin bands that divide the top controls from those at the bottom. The center stack is swooped asymmetrically. Much of the clutter that we had on the dash has been subdued. The calm demeanor originates from the matte, bamboo, grey wood and metallic trims that inject a cool design.
The F Sport is available with lipstick-red leather upholstery that covers the seats and door panels lasciviously. Lexus is becoming showy and the RX 450h seems like its starting point. The Lexus RX 450h offers the American market an all-wheel-drive system that comes as standard. Similar to the RX 350, it carries a seating capacity of about five passengers. The current model was first introduced in 2016. It features a 3.5-liter V6 that comes with Toyota’s D-4S port- and direct-fuel-injection system. This brings the power output to 308 horsepower. A CVT transmission comes as standard. EPA ratings are at 31/28 mpg city/highway for the RX 450h.
