The Q40 is the entry-level sedan in the Infiniti line up. It competes in the compact executive sedan segment with the likes of Lexus IS, BMW 3-Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class. It’s offered in rear and all-wheel-drive configuration.
One of the biggest advantages it has over its competitors is the powerful base engine, that out-accelerates any other sedan in its class. That said, this is the only engine on offer and is not the most fuel-efficient option for those who seek that kind of car.
Infiniti Q40 0-60 and Quarter Mile
The Q40 is probably the most focused sports sedan out there. While it lacks in refinement and comfort compared to almost all competitors, it gains in an outright fun. The sole engine is a powerful 3.7-liter V6 unit with 328 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired with a fast-shifting 7-speed automatic gearbox, which is also not very refined, but great for fast driving.
This is a car that offers the trills when accelerating on a straight road, while also offering balanced driving on a twisty road. The chassis provides dynamics and agility like no other competitor, while the steering is direct and provides a lot of feedback. This is a truly involving car that’s a blast to drive down the road.
And while every aspect of the sporty driving experience deserves praise, the same can’t be said when it comes to comfort. The suspension is on the stiff side, the engine is pretty vocal above 2,500 rpm, and there is a lot of tire and road noise, especially for a vehicle in this class. Every competitor does comfort better than the Infiniti Q40.
The fuel economy is also below the average in the class, which is in part due to the more powerful engine.
Exterior & Interior
The outer body of the Q40 resists the trends of big, gaping grille in the front and aggressive and angular sidelines. This is in part due to the age of the model – the same design dates back to 2007 when the Q37 was announced, and that’s the same model like this one. That said, many will like the understated design and to be honest, we already know that it will age very well.
The interior is very well-thought-out as well, albeit it shows its age in the looks department. Still, the center console is nicely integrated into the whole design of the cabin and the display atop the dash doesn’t look like an afterthought like in many newer competitors. Cabin quality is great as well, both in materials and fit and finish department.
Space in the front is very good and the seats supportive (especially those in the Sport model), and the seating position is low, like in a sports car. Headroom in the back is very limited though.
Conclusion
If you value a more focused, sporty driving experience, you can’t go wrong with the Infiniti Q40. It may be old by now, but it still offers great performance, communicative steering, balanced chassis, and agility. That said, look elsewhere if you want your sporty sedan to be smooth, refined and spacious, as the Q40 is none of those things.
