The BMW Z3 made its debut in 1995. Before the first model hit the showroom, the car was already sold out. Part of this was because the intro was celebrity-influenced. In his 1995 Christmas catalog, Neiman Marcus caused a sales stampede after showcasing the sports car as the best Christmas gift. Earlier on, Pierce Brosnan had added fuel to the fire by introducing it in the 1995 James Bond GoldenEye film. It was the first modern roadster by BMW built for the mass market.
The Z3 was a fun and stylish sports car. The public fell in love with the car and this relationship proved to be enduring. Despite its outdated semi-trailing-arm rear suspension derived from the E30 3 Series, the car was able to revive the sports car energy within the market.
Initially, it was powered by a 1.9-liter inline-4 engine that could generate up to 138 horsepower. In 1997, a 2.8-liter inline-6 variant was introduced that could make 190 horsepower. The latter engine brought the Z3 to life. It was powerful enough to deliver a smooth ride while producing a differentiating sound.
It had excellent handling and was stable enough to please car enthusiasts as well as daily commuters. It was an entry-level roadster similar to the Miata, and yet an out-of-reach sports car like the 911. The 1.9- and 2.8-liter engines could be farther differentiated using wider rear fenders.
Within the interior was where the Z3 fell short. Materials used were cheap. The cabin offered little room and could be problematic for larger drivers. This was partly because of the oversize rearview mirror and the large, non-telescopic steering wheel. The convertible trims were baffled with windows made of cheap plastic. They clouded over time, diminishing the Z3’s luxurious image. In the coupe, the style was somewhat polarized.
The Z3 imperfections, however, were minor. Today, it provides to be a good option for a used sports car. The price is fair especially for those who couldn’t afford the Z3 when it first came out. It is a stunning choice for buyers looking to get a convertible or coupe that handles better than it looks.
