The entry-level luxury BMW 3 Series is a favourite in the United States market. This classy world-class vehicle features exquisite performance and one of the best rid-and-handling capabilities. No matter what model or year you choose, the 3 Series remains to be a solid bet. Despite constant revolution, it still offers the same benefits generation after generation.
The current 3 Series is quicker and bigger than its predecessors. Yet, BMW has managed to shed off some of the weight and make it more fuel efficient. In addition to extra space within its interior, the 3 Series also comes with revised steering and suspension and a bolder exterior look. However, BMW may have tampered with its sporting edge while working on improvements. The sedan and wagon, nevertheless, still offer a rewarding drive. The convertible and coupe versions are classified in the 4 Series and are critiqued separately.
The turbocharged, 3.0-liter, straight-six BMW engine churns about 248 hp at 5800rpm. On ignition, it emanates a heavy sound, particularly in the Sports mode. Lagging or lugging can be induced by engaging the high gear at lower rpm. In the eight-speed Steptronic automatic, however, this is not possible as the system matches the gear with its appropriate rpm. It still harbours some vigorous responses in its manual mode.
The BMW all-wheel-drive drivetrain takes a mere 4.6 seconds to hit the 60mph mark and 11.9 for the 100 mph mark. It covers quarter of a mile in just 13.9 seconds at 105 mph. When compared to the Cadillac ATS V-6, however, the Bimmer comes second. Its dynamics also slack a little, making it fall behind the Lexus IS350 F Sport and its Cadillac counterpart.
Unlike its predecessors, the current 3 Series depicts some lack of eagerness, a perception heightened by the steering’s corresponding lack of tactility. The 335i dominates with impressive performance stats but ranks quite low due to its poor handling conduct.
BMW holds quite a record when it comes to style. The interior is still quite intriguing, exhibiting some of the most attractive features in the class. The latest 3 Series is the most spacious yet. Combined with leather sports seats worth $1450 make it quite hard to resist. Even the long-time-criticized iDrive system has evolved to offer consumers true usefulness.
The 2015 335i was the first to debut BMW’s Dynamic Handling package. It featured adjustable sports steering and robust M suspensions. This made it a pretty quick machine with precise steering. The xDrive all-wheel-drive did feature some mild understeer along the track, but this is acceptable from a car of such caliber. Its 134 pounds of extra weight helped it maneuver the block quicker than its rear-wheel brother.
Test drives yielded a few demerits, among them being the car’s low skidpad scores compared to its 2013 model. It came in at 0.86g, contrary to 0.89g back then. Its breaking distance was also not that impressive, coming to a full halt at 186 feet from 70mph. The 2013 model needed 22 feet less to perform the same task. However, these braking scores can quickly be improved by a mere change of tires.
Another disadvantage of this performance-oriented machine is its noise. The internal-combustion sounds are lovely but tend to be too high at wide-open throttle. The volume scales hit up to 75 decibels. However, the noise subsides on the freeway at normal speed.
The 3 Series still carries enough charisma and power to make it a trendsetter amongst its competitors. The only issue with the current model is that for you to get the best, you have to choose the right one. This is something consumers never had to do, for all 3 Series models were good. The 2016 model offers more power and has more of the Ultimate Driving Machine focus that BMW fans love.
